Propolis

Propolis is a product of the beehive, made up of resins collected by the bees from leaf buds and bark of trees, mixed with beeswax and enzymes from the bee.  This substance is used in the beehive to, most importantly, sterilize the hive, as every cell in which the queen is to lay an egg in would be polished with a thin layer of Propolis.  It is also used to fill cracks and crevices in the hive, smooth out the interior surface and block hive entrances from other robber bees, antagonistic insects or rodents.  It is the darkening factor to beeswax, as these combs, which are routinely coated with this reddish/brown polish, would be melted down with the Propolis still intact.  One could say that the Propolis is the smell of a beehive as all surfaces of the beehive interior would eventually be coated with the aromatic Propolis.

Propolis in the medicinal sense has achieved several aliases such as "Natural Penicillin" and "Russian Penicillin" as it is a natural antibiotic, able to fight many diseases without building intolerance and without side effects.  And that is after being around for 45 million years being used as a healing agent for thousands of years.  From the Greek language, "Pro" meaning before and "polis" meaning city, which translates to Defenses of the city, the name clearly states the use of the Propolis as protection of the colony, from the outside as well as the spread of infection from within.

The constituents of Propolis include 55% resins collected from trees and plants (particularly the poplar), 30% beeswax, 10% etheric oils (essential oils) and 5 percent bee pollen.  Also included are organic and amino acids, vitamins, minerals, and bioflavanoids.  As the source of the resin will dictate other ingredients, they are not listed here, as that list would be in inconclusive at best.  Properties of Propolis include antibiotic, anti-bacterial, anti-septic, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, and an anesthetic.  Research has been conducted on Propolis for centuries and scientists from all over the world have found more than 60 pharmacological properties in Propolis including cinnamic acid, cinnamyl alcohol, vanillin, caffeic acid, tetochrysin, isalpinin, pinocembrin, chrysin, galangin, and
ferulic acid.

In the words of Dr. K Lund Aagaard of Denmark, earning the name "Dr. Propolis" for his exploits over 20 years of Propolis collecting and research:

The field of influence of Propolis is extremely broad.  It includes cancer, infection of the urinary tract, swelling of the throat, gout, open wounds, sinus congestion, colds, influenza, bronchitis, gastritis, diseases of the ears, periodontal disease, intestinal infections, ulcers, eczema eruptions, pneumonia, arthritis, lung disease, stomach virus, headaches, Parkinson's disease, bile infections, sclerosis, circulation deficiencies, warts, conjunctivitis, and hoarseness. Propolis helps regulate hormones and is an antibiotic substance that stimulates the natural resistance of the body.  Propolis may be used by everyone, sick or healthy, as a means of protection against microorganisms. Propolis is also effective against conditions caused by bacteria, viruses, or different fungi.  Propolis cures many diseases because it is a special natural substance with strong effect. The whole research program had a single purpose, namely to investigate this substance against the great number of diseases mentioned.  The numerous healing are relevant by themselves, and the number of people who use propolis is ever increasing.

Researchers in Romania, Popovice and Oita, zeroed in on one of the most
important effects of propolis.  Their paper is entitled "Influence of Extracts of Propolis on Mitosis".  Mitosis is a medical term for cell division, the process by which cells replicate themselves.  In cancer, malignant cells divide (and conquer) by multiplying wildly.  Obviously, a substance that affects cell division is very important in the management of this lethal disease.

It is not uncommon for the human body to harbor malignant cells.  In the healthy body, the immune system destroys cancer cells regularly.  It is a medical fact that even when a tumor gets a toehold, tissue never becomes completely malignant.  Cancer cells grow alongside normal cells.  In time, malignant cells may become too numerous for the immune system to handle. Cancerous cells eventually can encroach on and crowd out normal cells. However, Propolis appears to provide breathing space.  Because propolis acts to hold back the growth of malignant cells while simultaneously boosting the activity of normal cells, it can actually give the body the time to recoup and recover its normal healthy condition.

Propolis has been justly called Nature's premiere prevention.  The immune system is supported and strengthened by the ingestion of Propolis.  Modern scientific studies indicate that those who take Propolis regularly escape winter colds and sore throats and seem to develop a natural immunity to common viruses, including strains of flu.  Chemical antibiotics destroy all bacteria in the body, both the friendly, necessary flora required for healthy functioning in the entire gastrointestinal tract and the bad intestinal flora.  An individual who constantly takes prescribed antibiotics for one condition after another soon learns to his sorrow that the drugs may no longer work as well as they once did.  As invading bacteria get "smarter", the drugs become less and less effective.

Propolis can be included in your "arsenal" of natural ammunition in several
ways: Orally, several drops on your toothbrush with your normal toothpaste provide protection for diseases that affect the mouth.  For acute attacks or after
obvious exposure to colds or flu, half the eye dropper every few hours at the onset should correct the situation, but you have to use it for several days, at least as long as you would a prescribed antibiotic.  It only works if you take it.  It's close, but it is not a miracle potion.  For skin applications, towards correction of psoriasis or eczema, bruising or swelling, the tincture can be mixed into creams that are already used for the condition or a suitable body cream.  The colour will transfer although but it will wear off.  For maintenance, to promote proper cell division, 6 drops a day in a cup of tea, for example, is a wide recommendation. Propolis does not build up in your system, hence its ability to still be effective after many centuries, and there are no side affects, therefore, far more than the above recommendations can be used.  The author has in fact taken much more to no apparent side affects.

It is a medical fact that some biologically harmful strains of bacteria develop a resistance to chemical antibiotics.  Some harmful microorganisms are able to subtly change their characteristics.  Where once medical drugs easily destroyed certain bacteria strains, some bacteria can develop defensive characteristics that leave the body open to its destructive effects.  Propolis, the natural antibiotic, works against harmful bacteria without destroying the friendly bacteria the body needs.  Propolis has also been proven effective against strains of bacteria that resist chemical
antibiotics.
